Dunlin

The Dunlin (Calidris alpina) is another small wader seen in large numbers on my local beaches.

The fact that it is common makes it very useful to birders, because it forms the yardstick for identifying other small waders – learn all the dunlin’s plumage and structure variations and you’re well-placed to spot birds that are out of the ordinary and perhaps “interesting”.
