Eider duck

The Eider duck (Somateria mollissima) is a common sea duck, often seen in large numbers off the North East coast.

The local nickname is “Cuddy duck“, after St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne, who offered them a sanctuary on the Farne Islands in the Seventh century – possibly the earliest example of a bird being given conservation protection.
