Acratech is very well known and respected manufacturer of tripod heads and associated fitments for professional photography, so it’s fair to assume that a product invented by the company which they offer as an effective alternative to heavy, expensive gimbal heads will have something going for it…
And here it is.
The Acratech Long Lens Head (no doubt what it’s for then…) is – in essence – little more than a universal joint which attaches to a tripod and a camera lens: simple, straightforward, versatile, light (1 lb in weight compared with 3+ lbs for a Wimberley) and significantly less expensive – the Wimberley Mk II is £500 but the Acratech will certainly be significantly less.
And – on the strength of a YouTube video I watched last night – it works.
This head is discussed from 1:00 into the video.
