St Mary's and Hartley

Posted on 21 March 2009, 14:41

Thanks to the continuing utter fucking ineptitude of my local bus company (seriously – how is it even possible to wait 25 minutes for a bus which is supposed to run every 15 minutes?) I didn’t make it to the cliffs at The Leas at Marsden.

Instead, I ended up having another fairly fruitless traipse around St Mary’s, spending – as usual – more time watching the ground to avoid the dogshit which is everywhere than looking for birds.

I did however get this rather nice full frame Greylag on the wetland:

I got a couple of nice enough Reed bunting images, but the light wasn’t right for them, so I decided to check out the Fulmars at the cliffs at Hartley.

I’m really not very good with flying Fulmars!

I did however, get what – for me – is a pretty good JIF (Jackdaw In Flight):

After a while a Fulmar landed on the cliff not too far from me, and as it called at birds passing close by overhead, I took this:

Calling Fulmar, Hartley cliffs

Unfortunately, because of the structure of the cliffs here, I was leaning out rather a lot to get this and several other landed Fulmar images (including some nice bonding behaviour) but still got too much out of focus cliff in the way (much of the greenery on the left hand side of this picture is cloned in to cover a big OOF “smudge” of cliff) so a lot of these pictures are unlikely to see the light of day…

What do you think?
